Streaming Team Defenses: How to Pick a D/ST Every Week
Stop drafting defenses early
Team defense is the least predictable position in fantasy from one season to the next, and the gap between the fifth best and the fifteenth best over a full year is smaller than a single good matchup. That is why streaming works: instead of owning one defense, you own whichever defense has the best situation this week, and you pay for it with a late draft pick and a roster spot.
What actually makes a good matchup
Three things drive defensive scoring, in order. The opposing quarterback: rookies, backups, and turnover-prone starters feed sacks and interceptions. The opposing offensive line: injured tackles mean pressure, and pressure means points. Then the Vegas line: a defense favored by a touchdown at home tends to play with a lead, and offenses playing from behind throw more, which is where the turnovers live. Weather and a short week for the opponent are tiebreakers.
The two-week rule
Look one week ahead, not just at this one. If this week's stream also has a soft matchup next week, hold it and save a claim. If a defense on the wire has back to back easy games starting next week, grab it a week early while nobody is looking, especially in leagues where waivers only process once a week. Streaming defenses is mostly about avoiding the Tuesday scramble everyone else is in.
How WaiverWiz handles it
Team defenses are in the WaiverWiz player list, so your D/ST sits on your roster with everyone else. Waiver answers include available defenses with a claim priority when the matchup calls for a swap, and start/sit calls cover the defense slot when you own two. Search a city, a nickname, or an abbreviation to add one.
FAQ
Should I stream defenses or hold one all season?
Stream unless you own one of the two or three elite units, and even then check the matchup weekly. For most rosters, the best available defense each week out-scores a fixed mid-tier defense over a season.
What is the most important factor for a defense matchup?
The opposing quarterback. Rookies, backups, and turnover-prone passers produce the sacks and interceptions that drive defensive scoring more than anything else.
When should I pick up next week's defense?
As soon as this week's games kick off, if your league allows free agent adds, or in the same waiver run as your other claims. Grabbing a defense one week early avoids competing for it on Tuesday.
